Four Layout Types for Every Building

Single Unit Layout
Connects two floors with a single escalator unit. Ideal for buildings where pedestrian flow is predominantly one-directional — the travel direction can be reversed according to peak demand (e.g., upward in the morning, downward in the evening).
This is the most space-efficient option and is commonly specified for boutique retail, office lobbies, and mid-size department stores.
Continuous Arrangement — Unidirectional
Two escalator units stacked in a continuous run connecting three sales floors in one direction. This layout offers the fastest vertical throughput and suits small-to-medium department stores with a linear floor plan.
The trade-off is a larger floor area compared to interrupted arrangements, but the uninterrupted ride improves customer experience.
Interrupted Arrangement — Unidirectional
Escalator units are offset at each floor level, requiring passengers to take a brief walk between units. This intentional interruption routes customers past product displays and advertising areas between floors.
Widely used in shopping malls where maximizing retail exposure per floor is a priority. More space-efficient than the continuous layout on mid-size floor plates.
Crisscross Continuous — Bidirectional
Up and down escalators cross each other in a crisscross pattern, providing simultaneous bidirectional flow across multiple floors. This maximizes throughput in both directions and minimizes passenger travel time between any two levels.
The preferred layout for large department stores, airport terminals, metro stations, and major public transit hubs where both up and down traffic is heavy at all times.
